“Loins of the Mind”

I Peter 1:13 – “Wherefore gird up the loins of the mind; be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Okay, over the past few days, we have discussed several important features surrounding preparation and girding up our minds. It’s time that we dig deep into fully understanding the working of the spiritual mind using a physical approach. I wanted to really dig into the loins of the mind and what that means. It means the hind part of the brain or the hind brain.

The hind brain consists of the cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and pons. The hind brain is the areas of the human brain that holds your intellect. It is where ideas are conceived and where movement and motor skills are coordinated. The hind brain controls the body’s vital functions such as respiration and heart rate. I want to focus for just a moment on the fact that movement is coordinated in this part of the brain. If this area is damaged then it could cause an individual to be a quadriplegic.

This area of the physical brain is important because it controls some of the vital functions for survival. Flip the script for just a moment and think of the “spiritual hind brain”. In our study scripture, we are instructed to gird up the loins of our mind (the spiritual hind mind) with truth.

Ephesians 6:14, states “Stand therefore having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breast plate of righteousness.” Your mind should be covered and wrapped in the Word of God.  As believers, we must be productive and self-disciplined.  This will give us the fortitude to focus on the Word of God, develop our Worship, and push us to be a Witness for Christ.

Don’t expose your spiritual mind, will, and emotion to things that do the following:

  1. Distorts reality
  2. Makes the mind insensitive to what is true, real, and valuable
  3. Diminishes your passion for God
  4. Desensitizes you to spiritual things

Avoid things that numb your spiritual mind to the Word of God like power, sex, and money. Protect your mind, will, and emotions with that which is reflective of God’s Word.

Journal entry:

    1. Write down the top 5 distractions, things that keep you mentally preoccupied from God’s Word and number them from 1-5 with 5 being the worst.
    2. Next to each distraction, write how you can counteract against each of these distraction.
    3. Write encouragement to yourself on how to follow through with this process.

Lord, thank you for your guidance and protection through your Word. Help me to develop a hunger for your Word and to protect my spiritual hind mind from those things that will distract and preoccupy my mind. Lord, I need encouragement through your Word that can drive me in the right direction. Lord I thank you in advance for what you are about to do in developing my spiritual mindset. Amen.
